(updapted july 25, 2006)
Hi !
I have been upgraded Xgl How To and its script! Now you can install Xgl with Xorg 7.0, please try scripts (en)-(fr) and HowTo, and tell me if all it's OK for you !
Warning : if you use symbolic link to launch Xgl at statup YOU MUST switch to gdm (look on HowTo).

I Hope Evrything Works Well !

  5. Doesn't work over here.

I've downloaded the Auto-Install script and used it in order to install Xgl. Everything went alright. Afterwards I've changed /etc/X11/xorg.conf , stopped GDM and run the xgl.sh script as the root. What I had got was a grey screen with the "wait" cursor in the middle. 5 minutes of waiting was fruitless. Unfortunately modifications prevented fglrx module from being loaded to my Radeon 9600. I've commented out the "Extensions" section and tried xgl.sh once again. No can do - the Xgl started, but not as it ought to do. It looked the same at the beginning - the "wait" cursor and grey background. Suddenly it changed into an "X" cursor, and next into standard one. The background color switched to black and nothing more happened. What I've found out was that the XGL started actually, because I could have rotate the desktop cube around and see the top and bottom square. Side (desktop) squares were black though.

I've stopped Xgl and downgraded compiz to compiz-cvs_060514-2.i586.rpm. That was it. Xgl started and has been working without any problems. Unfortunately after around 20 secs of having fun with windows it hanged. I wasn't even able to switch to console using CTRL+ALT+F1. I've decided to give a try to /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. After starting GDM it displayed the grey scren mentioned above, restarted 3 times and informed me about being unable to start due to problems with GDM configuration.

Haven't got any more ideas. Could you suggest me anything? I'd be grateful for your support.

    Few details regarding my box...
    /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Results of $ fglrxinfo (regarding my Radeon and ATI drivers etc.)

If you would need any piece of further information don't hesitate to ask.

  6. Hi Jano !
    line 398 of gdm.conf
    try it 0=Standard => 0=Xgl
try to remove ":0" in command line.
Else i think CTRL-ALT-FX interupts are grabed by Xgl/compiz, but i don't know how to change it (may be in gconf-editor).

    i hope i help you.
note : Xgl on ATI card sux...

  8. Sonique,

Thanks for your support. Unfortunately it didn't solve my problems.

Here you can see an extract from my /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. I've also modified /root/xgl.sh. Unfortunately it didn't change anything.

Firstly, after launching GDM it loads Xgl, restarts twice and afterwards informs me that it's unable to run GDM due to it's wrong configuration.

Sencondly, after '# sh /root/xgl.sh' it successfully starts gnome-session, but suddenly hangs up. I assume it is caused by delayed compiz launch.

At the end I have to inform you that Xgl on ATI cards does work, and does it perfectly. The best proof is Kororaa Project which runs Xgl without any problems using my Radeon 9600.

I hope you'll be able to solve my problem. I'll be waiting for your answer.

  10. Sonique,

    Here you are, my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
    - without Xgl (working)
    - with Xgl (not working, as described above)

As you may see difference is almost invisible (diff). I hope you'll figure out what's wrong. I'll be offline during following ten days and I'll check for your answer around 4th of August. Good luck.

(Well, maybe Nvidia is better, but I haven't got resources to get one ;). The only option I have is to configure what I've got.)

  11. Hi! I've the same problem as jano, trying to install on a system with an ATI card and xorg 7.0.

    I think it's gnome that doesn't work.
After launching /root/xgl.sh and waiting for 35 secs I see a black screen, in which xgl is running, since I can see the up and the bottom of the Novell cube if I press Ctrl-Alt-dragging the mouse.

I've tryied changing -accel xv:fbo with -accel:pbuffer and other things, or launching only xgl without compiz, but it doesn't work.

Have you managed to get xgl working with xorg 7.0 and an ati card, sonique'? Does it work well? Anyway, thank you very much for the tutorial, it's very useful! ;)

  12. Hello again,

i have tried everything, done your how-to all over again but i get this error when running the script:
    "The application 'gnome-session' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
    the application."

Xgl starts, i login to gnome as root but then the erros start.

  14. Hi, if you're having trouble starting Compiz, I think I can help. You need to update Mesa to 6.5. Now, if you're on i386, you can find packages in experimental. If not, you'll need to compile the libs -- http://www.mesa3d.org/cvs_access.html , or if you're on amd64, you can install these, but you'll need to force libgl1-mesa because of conflicts -- http://ubuntu.moshen.de/dists/dapper/eyecandy/ . I'm using Ubuntu packages from http://xgl.compiz.info/ installed with instructions from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/Xgl . If you have any questions about Compiz, you'll find help here -- http://www.compiz.net/index.php . Good luck!
